Brief History

Here is a copy of the program I was so sure I could find as shareware, but ended up having to write it myself. All I wanted was a program which would take text from e-mails which had funny > characters in front of every line and arbitrary line breaks, and clean up the text so I could paste it into a word processor or mail program and have the text be easy to read.

Pass this along to as many people as you want. It is shareware and will not expire.

What it does

The program simply takes whatever text you COPY or CUT to the clipboard and replaces that text on the clipboard with a cleaned up version. Leading > characters are removed and extra line breaks are removed. You then PASTE the contents of the clipboard to wherever you want it to appear. You can even replace the text you originally copied with the formatted text.

If you don't know what a clipboard is, it is piece of memory shared by all Windows programs which allows you to transfer data between them easily. It is where text lives temporarily between CUT and PASTE.

Installing FormatClip.

Download the program by saving it to your hard drive
Click on the download link above and choose the "Save to Disk" option in your Web Browser (and remember this location).

Every time your computer starts, FormatClip needs to be started if you want access to FormatClip. This can be done manually by double clicking on the formatclip icon in the location where you first downloaded it.

To have it start automatically:
Drag the FormatClip icon to your Startup Folder. To find your Startup Folder, click on the Start menu with the right mouse button and choose Explore from the menu. Double click on Programs folder from the right pane of the Explorer window and then drag the FormatClip icon to the folder named Startup.

How to Use FormatClip

Using any mail program or word processor, or anything which will allow you to select text, select the text you want formatted / cleaned up. Then copy it to the clipboard by using your word processor or mail program's Edit->Copy or Edit->Cut menu. Then click on the FormatClip icon at the bottom right of your screen (In the Windows Start Bar).

As soon as you click, the text is cleaned up, and replaces whatever text you had on the clipboard.

Now you can PASTE the newly formatted text into any window you can type in. Use your mail program or word processor's Edit->Paste command.
